S Health App is not new for Samsung devices
In Galaxy S4, Samsung first introduced the S Health App. Because there are so many bling-bling features in S4, S Health app failed to get deserved attention.
In Galaxy Note 3, Samsung slightly simplified the S Health app, and removed some features. Actually it is a correct move by removing confusing features and controversial data.
As Samsung wants to make Galaxy S5 part of our healthier lifestyle, they further enhanced the Galaxy S5 S Health app to make it a reliable fitness tracker.
With Galaxy S5, Gear Fit is also released so that you can track your activities easier.
New features in Galaxy S5 New S Health app
The most significant new feature of the new S Health app is the new, unified dashboard. It may sound trivial. But this really helps new users to use it easily. There are a lot of complaints on the confusing user interface of the S Health app in both Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3.
Now the new S Health App finally make it simple and straightforward.
In addition to walking mate and food tracker, Galaxy S5 new S Health app now also can track your heart rate, because of the new addition of the heart rate sensor.
Hiking was added to the Exercise Mate. So, in the new exercise mate, the workout includes running, walking, cycling and hiking.
S Heath app can sync with your Gear Fit, in addition to other fitness gadgets.
How to use Galaxy S5 New S Health app?
Using the new S Health app is very simple and straightforward thanks to the unified dashboard.
In the dashboard, you can find the results of walking mate (steps), exercise mate (walking, running, cycling and hiking), and food tracker (calories taken). Tapping any of them will bring you to the details of the corresponding tracker.
You can also start the walking mate, exercise mate and heart rate monitor from the dashboard.
What are the difference between walking mate and walking in exercise mate?
The walking mate uses the pedometer to record the steps. The distance is estimated and no location info is recorded. You can keep walking mate on to record your daily activity: walking to the car park, walking to your office, climbing the stairs. It will not take too much battery as the pedometer is not as power hungry as GPS.
The walking workout in exercise mate is measuring the distance and speed from GPS data. It is designed for outdoor exercise. You will get more accurate data on the distance, duration and speed (maximum and average), and therefore the calories burned.
These two are mutually exclusive: when you start walking mate, your exercise mate will be paused, and vice versa. So, your steps will never be counted twice.
How about alternatives for Galaxy S5 New S Health app?
There are some alternatives for Galaxy S5 S Health app. Some actually can track more activities and may have more functions, for example, Endomondo Sports Tracker.
The advantages of Galaxy S5 S Health app against those fitness tracker apps include:
- Simple to use. If you haven’t used any fitness tracking apps before, this new S Health app is a good start-point.
- Tight integration with Gear Fit.
- Easy to pair with other fitness accessories.

Hi, I have a Galaxy S5 and wondered if it was possible to manually enter exercises that I do at the gym? There doesn’t seem to be anywhere for me to enter the exercise that I would do on a rowing machine (for example)
simon says
Unfortunately, this feature was removed in Galaxy S5. In Note 3, yes, you can. But in S5, the plus button was removed.

Anyone know if they are planning on adding this function back or comparable one back? Kind of useless as a fitness app without it.
simon says
Samsung is a bit crazy on this s health app. Many useful features were removed after its first release in s4. Actually, s4 owners have more complaints because each update removes some features.

i have both an S4 and an S5, and yes the exercise mate in S4 version is way better than the S4 you can put your own workouts on or use loads of othere pre programmed features….i really miss this in S5 as you cant track calories burned on anything that is not walking, cycling, running or hiking…boo
simon says
If you update the firmware for your S4, actually, some of the features will be removed as well.

My S4 still has the old features, can I move it to my sd card and delete the new version to on my S5 and replace it with the old version? Plus don’t forget you always have the uninstall updates in phone settings.
simon says
No, the S Health app is tied to the TouchWiz (Samsung’s skin). There is no way to move S Heath app in S4 to S5.

It would be nice to have my 11 months of S4 S Health exercise pedometer stats somehow transfer to S5. Samsung link or cloud or? I even used the device xfer app. Started from zero. If it was my first Sammy I would understand.
simon says
Inside S Health in your S4, tap the software menu key (top left), tap settings–tap accounts, then tap backup. (this assumes you linked your S Health to an Samsung account). In your S5, go to similar locations, tap restore. Wait a few mins. it “may” re-store your data (and it may not. I don’t know the reason why Samsung cannot make this simple data sync always work). Try your luck.

So disappointing. I have been using this app for two years entering my gym workout along with logging my steps. Now that the add exercise feature is permanently removed its useless to me. Time to find something new. Stink Samsung 🙁
Thomas Cabello says
I’m new to the S health and I was wondering if you could sync S Health and Runkeeper. I noticed S Health in Runkeeper’s Settings but did not noticed sync-ability when I engaged it. Also if I go for a run using the S Health, will it transfer to Runkeeper or is the other way. Which app should I use while running, to make sure there is sync-ability?
simon says
For these two apps, actually, they do similar things. S Health has less bells and whistles, it is just a logger. I don’t think S Heath can syn data with other apps.
If you just need something to track your workout, S Heath is enough. If you need coaching, or some other guidances, S Health is NOT enough. In S5, Samsung apparently removed the capability to directly enter your other activities, e.g., gym, basketball…
Anyway, I don’t think you need both. For fitness tracker app, I think one is enough.

Ty for ur advice, it just confused me because on runkeeper, under settings, there is a “share settings” section that has S health on it. So I was wondering what the point of that is?
simon says
You mean the RunKeeper Elite that comes with Galaxy s5 gift. (I’m still using the standard/free one.)
I noticed although you can connect them in RunKeeper Elite settings, but no actual activity data were shared. There is a warning about some data to be shared, but S Health does not collect them.

I agree with Gavin above. Without the ability to manually add activities done independent of the phone/app. S Health 3.0 is useless to me as a health tracker, heart rate monitor or not. Really quite a bummer, I was excited to replace my downloaded app with this.
simon says
You can get the Runkeeper elite version for free on galaxy S5. But you must install it follow the more apps in s health or Galaxy gifts widget.

Tim Rodgers says
How do you get it for free?
simon says
You can get it in 2 ways:
1). in your Galaxy S5, in your Galaxy gifts, you can find this app. Once installed by following the link to Samsung apps store (not Google one), you get the elite version automatically for one year.
2). in S Health app, tap more apps, you can find it. Follow the link to get it.
Someone reminded me that you can directly go to Samsung app store to get it from your S5.
FYI: the lark activity tracker (Lark app) is another useful app (for one year) bundled for S5.

simon says
In galaxy gifts (by default, the is a widget in your home screen) , you can get the Runkeeper elite edition for free, which has all functions you need.
Please don’t get it from play store. It is a free version and you need pay money to upgrade to elite version.

What’s the point of the camera button in the food section? It would be helpful to have a bar code scanner so you can add food that’s not listed.

A lot of people want to record not only the calories, but also the beauty of the food. When you check facebook stream, you may get surprised at so many food photos. Nowadays, it seems a lot of people do not eat the food until a photo is snapped.
Anyway, the camera is supposed to analyse the calories for you as well. But it does not work yet.

There needs to be an upgrade that asked the user to add in more types of exercise, there are many more exercises then just hiking, running, walking and cycling. There’s a while big world out there but I can’t log it!!! Come on samsung get with it!!!!!!!
simon says
Actually S5 gives you the RunKeeper Elite version, which has all the features you want. It is not pre-installed. You must follow the Galaxy gifts widgets in your home screen to get it from Samsung app store, NOT from Google play store.
Anyway, the new S Health app now becomes so basic……. It aims at absolutely new users who never use fitness tracker apps before.
The consolation is that Samsung gives two competitive fitness tracker apps in the gift package. For long-term fitness tracker users, it should be sufficient.

This is frustrating me too. There is a standard formula to calculate calories burned and this app seems to not use it… for me I burn about 150 cals per mile… after 4 miles it said i only burned 400. My weight info is in the profile so the app needs some help doing the math. It has also been off on running the exact same route by over a quarter from one day to the next.
Benek says
I’m a bit confused how the S Health calculates calories burned myself… where. you check out formulas online for say jogging 4 miles, you get much much smaller numbers than with the S5 and it’s kinda frustrating…

I also haven’t figured out. Maybe they use some Korean formula. 😅

This has to be one of the worst apps I’ve ever used. I’m trying to lose weight and have never been a runner but thought I’d give it a try. I was excited to see this app and entered all my info and started tracking information. After reaching my goal the app reset itself. Now it just keeps asking me to set up an account to get started. How am I supposed to track my results if this app won’t go past one day? Nice thought but very disappointing.

Brad says
I have used MyFitnessPal previously, and after getting the S5 and reading about S Health online, I was excited about trying it out. However, Samsung really missed the boat in gutting the S Health app and making it not worthwhile. The following items would have to be added back to make it useful:
1. Add back the ability to enter in custom workouts. As someone that does yoga on a daily basis, I would like to enter in my workout, along with the calories that I burned.
2. Add back the ability to select a weight loss goal like what existed in the original version on the S4. For instance, you can no longer select to lose 2lbs/weekly with this app.
3. I’m not sure if this existed in the previous version, but you should be able to scan the barcode on items that you eat instead of having to manually look things up.
I realize that Runkeeper is being promoted – but that isn’t acceptable. The issue at hand is that the gutting of S Health has made it unusable. I really like the idea of the pedometer that shows on my lock screen, but that’s not enough for me to give up on using an app like MyFitnessPal. If Samsung added the functionality back that it took out, then S Health would be awesome. But as of now, it’s pretty much useless.
simon says
Many S5 owners expressed their disappointment of the new S Health (lacking of features). Samsung used to give half-baked features. In S5, they tried very hard to polish existing features and make it simple for daily use. But For S health, it is overdone.
Lacking of some key features makes this app inferior. As you already know, some features actually was removed from S4.
Anyway, S Health will have an update in Q2/Q3. We probably will see more features added.

Is there a sequence for connecting? For the S4 there was no sequence or issue. Maybe the S5 needs one.

Is there a way to recover my S Fit password?
I don’t remember it. Thanks!
simon says
Which password? password for Gear Fit or S health?
For S health, you probably have to reset (clear cache, clear data) the app to clear all settings (and data). But you can try to backup the data to a PC with Kies 3, before clearing data for the app.

I used the Health app on my S5 today for the first time to track my bike ride. I would like to be able to share the map on Facebook to show my route and distance. There is no function to do it. On the first page there was an opportunity to share on Facebook and Twitter… but you click that and it takes you to the camera gallery so you can upload a photo. Can you fix this bug? Thanks.

I’m finding that the backup function (either via Auto backup or backup now buttons) on the S-health (3.1.0.0039) on my Galaxy S5 does not do the job properly. The backup process always fails, and I’m certain that I have the internet access (3G or Wifi). I’m always on my original data when I created my Samsung account.
Is this a bug?
simon says
Yes, there are some problems for S5. On Note 3 or S4, there are no issues.

I miss the food tracker widget for S5. I barely remember to track my food and having the food widget front and center was great on my S4. I don’t like having to open other stuff to get that section. Our if I could have the whole main screen the app, be a widget, that would be ok too.
Matt Cain says
my pedometer appears to no longer be accurately tracking my distance traveled, I’m pretty sure I took more than 37 steps today! … is there any way to re-sync/re-set the app?
simon says
You can try to power off your s5, remove the battery, wait one or two mins, put the battery back, then power on the s5. This will reset the sensor.
If you still get unreasonable readings, you may have to visit local Samsung service center because it can also be caused by a faulty sensor.

just bought the S5 and got the watch ( neo 2) Tried to install the sleep portion of the apps and it (A) doesnt send the install to the watch and (B) disappears from the phone. Not sure why.. I have installed several apps and watch faces etc so I think I have a grasp on how to do this.. just can’t seem to get it to work. When I installed the app initially on the phone it said the watch was connected. I assumed that the data would pass to the phone from the watch if I left the app on the phone.. I’m now realizing that more than likely it needs to be on the watch and running to send to the phone.. So does anyone have a suggestion.. Thank you..

Sorry if this question has already been asked and answered. However, Since last week when I go on my walks all of a sudden it is not keeping correct mileage or calories burned. The walk is only 1.63 miles but today it told me I went 4.56. Can you tell me why or how to fix this. Thanks. (S5)
simon says
The distance in Pedometer is not accurate.
If you are using walking within exercise, GPS is used to measure the distance. The inaccuracy can be caused by the wrong/weak GPS info.

The auto-backup does not work most of the time. You may try to manually backup the account data.
Anyway, I’m also facing many issues with this crap. You may try the Runkeeper Elite (follow the more apps in S Health).

You click on the app that shows your steps for the day. It takes you to where it shows your distance and calories for the day. There is a Pause button. Beside of that is a trophy. Click on the trophy and it will take you to the Leaderboard and Your Rankings. This is on Samsung S5.
simon says
thank you for the info. This one (and data backup) didn’t work for me for some time. Now it seems both of them work now.
Very likely, the data in leader board are based on data on their server. Sometimes, Samsung’s server is not so reliable. You may go to (inside S Health) settings–Accounts. You can try to manually backup the data (tap backup–backup now).
The “ranking last updated…..” is very likely just got from your phone’s local time.

I have had my galaxy s5 for over a month now. I love it! I was really exciting to find the s health app with the heart rate monitor. I have used the running app several times. First couple of times it seemed to worked flawlessly. However, the last several times I used the app for tracking my running it was very inaccurate. I ran the same distance before which was a 2 mile run and the last couple of times running that same distance the app recorded 4 miles at 24 minutes , which would be an amazing run but not Lily for me, and 5 miles. Both times my GPS was on and working well. The Runkeeper app is tracking my runs more accurately. However I like the combined food tracker and heart monitor in s health. I would like to still use the s health. How do I fix my s health to record accurate distances each time?
simon says
A lot of of people reported the inaccurate distance in s health. If seems it is very likely a software bug or a defect. We have to wait for an update.

I have been using Runkeeper basic and happy with it.
I just got a S5 and excited by the S-Health. And am considering getting a Gear fit to match the S5.
However I wonder if I should if S health cannot integrate with runkeeper and runkeeper capability cannot be done by s health….
I realized is does not have the interval audio cues?
Any use of gear fit if I am still relying on runkeeper that can capture manual excercise which s health cannot ?
simon says
In runkeeper, you can connect S health with runkeeper. But based on my usage, no data are transferred… So, I assume it is not working.
Yes, in runkeeper, you can log many types of activities. S Health…, no.
My conclusion is S Heath is really an entry level app for users who never use such apps before. It is too basic… If you are familiar with runkeeper, or other similar apps, you will get frustrated with S Health. I guess some of the S Health developers probably don’t use their own app (if they happen to use any fitness tracking apps).
For me, I just turned on pedometer (there is a widget, and you can show it on lock screen as well). All others are done in Runkeeper. This is the healthiest choice because you avoid the frustrations with S Health.
Gear fit is a good device, but for fitness tracking, it is almost useless if you don’t use S Health. The heart rate monitor in gear fit is not so reliable. Better to get a 2-piece one.

have you updated Galaxy S5 to Lollipop? S health is different and Lollipop.
Start S Health, in running, for example, tap MORE in top right, tap Audio guide, enable Guide at intervals. Then tap notification interval, you can choose every 0.5, or 1, or 1.5kms, or every 5mins, or 10mins, or 30mins.
Of course, the settings in RunKeeper is more intuitive.

Note 3 uses a different version of S Health.
Do you mean the walking mate is greyed? In this case, you probably have to clear cache and clear data for the app.

I can’t find the Runkeeper elite app anywhere but on Google play. I also want to update other workouts into s health. Any chance Strava will soon interact with S Health? It interfaces with gear fit but data does not transfer to S Health.
simon says
First, you should not install this app from Google play store if you want to get the one-year elite subscription. You should get it from Samsung apps, there is a link in the S Health app (more apps). You can also find the link for it in galaxy essentials.

I looked in galaxy essentials and it was not present. I clicked the more apps in S Health only to find a program called Lark but nothing else. After looking a third time I found a link to runkeeper in a tip at the top of the page but when you click it it takes you to Samsung Apps to regular runkeeper not elite and when I tried to download the app it says not available in store. Error 4002.
simon says
It should be under Galaxy gifts.
The app is normal app in Samsung store. But once you open it, it will activate the elite membership for one year on Galaxy S5 devices.
If you install it from Google play store, you will NOT get the elite membership.

OK I figured it out so now I don’t feel so stupid. I have the Galaxy s5 active from AT&T. On the Samsung Apps website if you list your phone as the Galaxy s5 Active not all apps are available. If I list my phone as the regular galaxy s5, RunKeeper magically appears. In samsung apps mobile on the actual phone, your phone model is automatically entered and cannot be changed I don’t believe. I thought I was losing my mind. Not sure there is that much difference between the regular S5 and the active. I assume this is a technical oversight but at least I figured it out.
simon says
Glad to know you get it. But I’m not sure whether you can get the free elite membership for S5 active, because Samsung only advertise the offer for S5.

I have called the company I bought the phone from and they have no clue; I have disabled mobile data – super inconvenient; I have deleted Shealth and YouTube; I have changed the settings for foreground and foreground data but still sucking up data like crazy.
HELP?
simon says
If you disable mobile data, it should not use mobile data. If you want to completely disable mobile data, you can call your phone company to disable mobile data totally in the SIM card. Of course, you can also purposely use a wrong APN (but it will be reset to correct once you reboot the phone).
It sounds to me there are some bad apps running in the background. If I were you, I would: 1). disable background data (setting–data usage, tap menu key, check Restrict background data); 2) install Greenify to force third-party apps to sleep. If you want to be more aggressive (for testing ONLY), you can set background limits to 2 or 3. This is available in Settings –Developer options (you need enable it by following this guide: https://galaxys5guide.com/samsung-galaxy-s5-how-to-guides/how-to-access-the-developer-options-on-samsung-galaxy-s5/ )

Is there a way to recalibrate the counts of your steps? My husband and I are walking the same distance and mine is reading an additional 2 miles.
simon says
The distance reported in exercise mate is calculated from GPS, not number of steps.
The number of steps reported in walking mate (and in the widget in your home screen and lock screen) is from step counter. There is no distance reported for this.
If you are talking about distance, I guess the problem is probably caused by the food signal. Of course, some owners reported inaccurate distance reporting from s health.

Jeffery Seamans says
Does anyone know why s health calorie counter gives you a medal when you EXCEED your calorie goal for the day? Seems quite backwards to me. I can’t find a way to change it
Frankie Leon Edging says
Because the medal is for calories burned, not consumed. I thought the same thing at first. So if you set your calories to 1000/day and burn 1000 or more, you get the medal. The medal has nothing to do with your goal for calories consumed.
Jeffery Seamans says
Nope. There are three medals you can earn. Steps, calories burned, and calories consumed. When you put in all the food you eat for each meal it adds it all up for the calories medal that has the knife and fork symbol. When you reach or exceed your calorie goal like 3000 calories it gives you a medal. If you eat below your goal it doesn’t give you one.
simon says

Can you point out how to get the app to see it, since you say it should work?
And, I don’t care about the “Gear Fit” not working with Endomondo, or with the warranty issue if I flash. I’d rather have more control over MY phone, that I own, than what Samsung THINKS I should be able to do with it (That’s why we buy Android to begin with.)

Ola says
Hello Samsung
Is the S-health measuring actual distance through GPS or is it measuring length through some steplength?
i feel it is giving me longer distances then actually is the case.
Regards Ola
simon says
S health uses GPS to measure distance. The pedometer in S5 only gives steps, not distance.
To save battery, the GPS signal updating is not as frequent as that in navigation apps. So, the distance may be not so accurate. But overall, the error should be less than 20%.
Some apps may update GPS signal slightly more frequently, e.g., RunKeeper, and therefore, they may give more accurate distance. But the drawback is it may consume more battery juice.

Verne Brown says
I have been using the S Health program on my S5 for about 2 weeks and have found that the mileage estimator is wildly optimistic. For example, today I walked a modified path from my usual and it reported a distance of 2.15 miles. Since I knew that couldn’t be correct, I re-walked the same path using my GPS tracker (RunKeeper) and it gave me a reading of 1.43 miles. Other that telling S Health that I’m about 10 inches tall, how can I get it to give me a more realistic estimate?
simon says
The distance in pedometer is totally unreliable. You can treat it as entertainment.
The distance in exercise mate-walking (for outdoor only) is purely based on GPS. The accuracy of GPS depending on many factors: time (satellite location), weather condition, location, and sampling frequency (sampling every 2 seconds every 2 seconds surely will give more accurate results than that every 10 seconds..).
S Health is a bit conservative in sampling frequency to save battery. This usually leads to less accurate readings. If accurate results are necessary for you, I would not recommend S Health.
Anyway, for the same path, you may get different distance even for walking and running…

Do you have to pause the pedometer when you get in a car on the S5? Sometimes I notice the footsteps counted don’t change, or at least only a few steps, but sometimes it seems to have counted the entire distance driven if I forgot to pause it. Thanks!
simon says
No, you don’t have to pause the pedometer, which is designed to be always on.
Yes, it may update the steps after a few (about 3) steps, especially after you stop a while.
The steps should not be counted when driving. The pedometer is smart enough to know whether you are walking.

It maps the route properly, speed up and slow downs, but distance is off, and it varies from one day to the next. Is there any way to increase sampling even if more battery is used?
simon says
Unfortunately, Samsung does not provide any options to change these settings. I guess they set hard – coded.
Anyway, you may try RunKeeper. It’s free. In most regions, one year elite membership is offered from s5 owners. You need get it from Samsung apps (Galaxy apps).

The app makes me look really good. It records a 3.5 mile walk as 9 but it is very discouraging that it can not be calculated to be accurate!

The distance is only accurate when gps signal is good.

Hello,
Is there any way to modify/tweak/fine tune the results and route taken on the Jog function in S Health on the S5?
I’ve just now returned from a jog and whilst it showing I completed my route (almost accurate to the path I took) with an average speed of 57.6 km/h does look and sound impressive, I cannot kid myself – this was not my actual result and doesn’t assist my development.
Also, due to hitting “Stop” rather than “Pause” on the Gear Fit watch when waiting at traffic lights, I had to start a new exercise plan. Is there a way to merge 2 activities into one?
Thanks
Giles

I agree with a lot of the comments here. S Health is not a great app if you do more than walk, run, bike, or hike for exercise. I swim 2000 yards twice a week, take boxing classes, spin classes, and enjoy work out videos at home when I can’t get to the gym. It is really disappointing that I can’t add these work outs to my cals burned. It looks like the ability to do a lot of that has been removed. BOO on Samsung. I like to have more variety in my work outs. Looks like I will be go back to my old apps for that. What a bummer!!!
simon says
The S Health occasionally gives wrong results. But I don’t think you can modify it. Just accept it to entertain yourself.
To merge the log entries, S Health doesn’t provide this feature. I was told the S Health API provide this function. It seems Samsung developers didn’t eat their dog feed. No third party developers care about the API.
For serious users, I recommend them not to use S Health because very likely, you data cannot be moved to newer Samsung devices.
But S Health is good for new and occasional users because it’s simple.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE…allow the gear 2 to sync with Myfitnesspal. That’s such an easy fix to the problem. Myfitnesspal is a grat app that already allows for most other wearables and 3rd party apps to sync with it.
Do what you do best, that’s make good hardware, and let the app companies make good apps. Your customers are getting agitated (especially your S4 users) and will switch to HTC on their next upgrade.

Hi everyone. I’ve been using S Health program on my S5 and I’ve noticed that it shows too many kms. I’ve compared the distance with “Sport tracker” on my mobile and with some other programs on different mobiles. I’ve monitored my S Health walking and I noticed that at some point it just adds to the distance walked. Sometimes 500m and sometimes a few kms. I’ve reset the program twice. What can I do? Thank you, Josip.
simon says
There are no settings for this, unfortunately.
Last time, I was told the inaccurate distance is due to low GPS sampling rate (to save battery). The error depends on location , terrain and GPS signal. But it should be less than 20%.

As a Gear fit advocate I can honestly say the Gear fit is horrible. For example, I just ran 4.3 miles in 35 minutes but according to S health and my fit watch I only ran .53 miles in 35 minutes. Not only that but the sensor on the fit for the heart rate is different from the sensor on the S5 itself which makes it a million times less accurate. The watch gets “unable to read” message 90 percent of the time. Other than what the watch was actually made for, the display and messages and everything non “Fit” related works well.
And the S health on the S4 was a million times better because I could actually correct the watches mistake.
In short, if your going to dish out 200 bucks, you might as well go for the Gear Neo.
Kevin says
I just got the S5 and I’m looking for a wearable device that can display time, distance, pace, and heart rate. I’m not interested in the Gear Fit due to the price and mixed reviews. Does anyone know of some reasonably priced devices that can display this information and are compatible with S Health and/or with RunKeeper?
SidaLia Marshall-Bys says
I don’t know why the S Health app on my Galaxy S5 records a different distance and calories each time I walk the same path. Another time I walked a short distance with my husband and it recorded more colories. Can you explain?
simon says
This is a known problem for S Health. The inaccurate results are linked to the GPS sampling frequency, GPS signal strength, location and your speed.
The solution is to try RunKeeper. It’s free. You can also get one year elite membership for free from your s5.

I’m a new S5 user. I have been using S Health app lately, tracking on my running. Under Exercise/Running. Great app to track my distance and timing. When I finish the workout, the data will be saved and I can track a series of workout on the Log page. But on the Details page, Duration showed some timing difference. I know I have clocked 42 mins for my 5km run but Duration showed 15:44. I want to know what does this number equates to? I tried to hunt for manuals and explanation but non.
Please explain. Thanks.

It would be extremely helpful if this Health App was able to integrate and track the results of a few specialized fitness apps.
For instance, I like to use the following: a)My Fitness Pal to track food: easy user interface and wide range of foods included in their database. The food scan also makes things quick and painless. b) Nike + Running and Training to track exercise: fantastic app to set goals, track your progress, and use challenges with other people. Again, easy to use and able to be adjusted to suit my preferences.
If the S Health app could take the data and integrate it into their dashboard it would make things really easy to track all at once.

It sounds like a hardware problem. You may have to visit local Samsung service centre.
You may try to clear cache and clear data for the app.

It’s ridiculous that I can’t add my own workout but I can add my own food! I can’t find run keeper elite and I am not even sure that would help me. I installed the workout trainer hoping it would sync workouts that I am tracking in there…it doesn’t. I also downloaded Lark Activity which is a complete joke. I have to use two apps to track all the info I want. A newbie to tracking this info (who would most likely be going to a gym) would be just as frustrated that they cannot input their own workouts or sync to something that does. This is the first time I am truly disappointed in a Samsung product. I hope that the next update changes things back to the way that I hear they were originally with the S4 (being able to input activity) because otherwise that is a big mistake on Samsung’s part.
simon says
You can try the Runkeeper from Play store. The elite membership is limited time offer, I guess. The app is almost identical to that in Play store (elite membership is just a subscription, which is not necessary for some users).
Yes, Samsung messed up the S health app. The initial launch in S4 is very promising. But the later updates removed a lot of useful features. There are many alternatives in Play store for different purposes.

I am having the same problem with my steps being counted, but not updated to the server for over a week. Your comment Matthew was about the 4th or 5th to that effect in this comments section, and there has not been one useful response other than that the server isn’t reliable. If Samsung wants to market the S health functionality, then they should fix the problem. I spoke with technical support, and they seemed to have no idea it was happening and were going to look into it. No response so far. I find it interesting that I can find the issue in a comments section of the internet, but Samsung technicians are unaware of it. This is the kind of thing that makes me change brands because it isn’t the functionality itself that is so critical, it is the lack of trust that I develop in the company. The S5 is my second Samsung and I have a Samsung refrigerator as well, but they may be my last Samsung products.
simon says
For this issue, you really cannot do much,as I know. It’s mainly a server side problem in some regions.

You probably remove it from home screen accidently.
You can tap the 16 dots button in any home screen pages. It will redirect you to app drawer what you can find all apps on your phone. Locate S Health, tap and hold it. Now you are in home screen again. Release your finger from the screen. The app is now dropped to your home screen.

The S Health follows the screen timeout settings under settings–display. This is to save your battery and to avoid accidental operations.

I uninstalled the update and its fine – what is wrong with the update from samsung that it does not work properly on their own device? This needs attention. I have seen some posts on other android bulletin board and its an issue.
RockyGal says
Before this last update, you could leave the app to open another app, say like music. Then you would see the S Health icon at the top of your phone (SSGS5) showing that it is running and it would continue running. Now, if you leave the S Health screen for any reason, it stops recording your workout. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID developers!!! It was fine. Why can’t they just leave it ALONE?!! Now, you cannot do ANYTHING else while your workout is recording. So, I presume if you were to get a text message or call, it would shut down as well. If anyone from Samsung is reading this PLEASE FIX THIS PROBLEM!!!!! Arrrrrrgh!
simon says
You may try to press home button to leave the app. S health should run in background.
You may try to reboot the phone to see whether it helps.

Worked for three months, then stopped. Has not updated in about a month now. Don’t even bother with the scoreboard any more. If the app doesn’t really work, I think it does more damage than not offering it at all. They should ditch the scoreboard. It has changed my attitude about Samsung products knowing that they would knowingly offer something that does not work.
Larry Johnson says
Like several others who have posted comments over the last month, my S Health app no longer links up to the scoreboard. The man at the Verizon store gave me the Samsung Technical Assistance phone number 1 800 726 7864. Called and rep said he had never heard of this problem (Really). I asked if this would be fixed. He said all he could do was note the problem in his notes. Said the higher ups read the notes, and maybe they will followup. He said he could not promise anything. Is that any way to run a business? I suggest as many people as possible with this issue call the phone number and complain. Maybe if they get enough calls they will fix this. And if they are never going to make the scoreboard work again, they should send out an email to that effect to the 3 million plus users and take it off the app. If anyone has been told how to fix, would love to know. Larry J.
simon says
You may try to check whether there are any updates for your s health app.
Yes, some users experienced this issue. it could be due to some issues in some Samsung servers in some regions.

Simon (Samsung) must be getting tired of giving the same answer over and over again, even though there is little or no chance that it will do any good. Do what Larry suggested. Fix it or remove it. Guess Samsung isn’t all that good at electronics since their servers are so pitiful.
simon says
I am also just a user. As I know, the problem can be due to: 1). Samsung servers having some problems. But this should last not more than a few days. 2). outdated S health app on the phone. Sometimes, update on server side may require updated app. So, when it reminds you new update, you should apply it. You need update the HealthService as well when it asks you to do it. 3). network issue. You ISP may accidentally block Samsung server IPs or Samsung server may accidentally block your ISP’s IP. 4). Some apps or settings blocking the connection to Samsung server. 5). aliens in the phone.

I have an S4 but the SHealth got updated on my phone a couple days ago. Then the problems started. I loved the previous version where I could add my other exercises. I uninstalled the updates and it uninstalled the entire app. At this point I’m not even sure all the things I did but nothing but problems. somewhere along the way my user name was someone else, even though my email was correct. I finally thought I had it all fixed and back to the new version but it kept asking me to sign in and I could not figure out how to make it stop. I did all the things listed above and still always wanted that darn password. Finally gave up and uninstalled it. Decided it wasn’t worth the headache and without being able to add my own exercise it was pretty useless. Using myfitnesspal now with a add-on pedometer. I might think about going back to S Health if he problems were resolved, i.e. adding exercise and reentering the password. Went from a 5 star app to a minus 2 star app.
simon says
The password issue is probably due to your Samsung account. You may try to log in once in Galaxy Apps.

Good day I have the new Note 4. S Health is working however I can not see my ranking or leader-board score as there is a problem downloading my info and getting info from the server. It says unable to load data. A server error has occurred. How can this be fixed?
Mike Jeffrey says
Based on the experience of most users who have this issue (a lot), it will never be fixed. Various things like re-installing, waiting for updates, clearing caches, etc. don’t fix it. You will likely just have to give up on using the Scoreboard. Samsung is well aware of this issue and until they fix it, is is doubtful anything you do will make a difference.
Christer Bjurkell says
This is ridicules I thought Samsung by now would have fixed their problem with the scoreboards in “S Health” for Galaxy S5 instead of the excuses blamed on the server in the region. I’m traveling between the US and Canada so I assume my phone will contact to different servers. The last time my scoreboard was correctly updated was Oct.13 after that the only update I have got is a decline in my ranking since my steps haven’t been accounted for. I only use the pedometer when I’m do my exercise walk, which I do approximately every third day. So as of today Nov.28 I should have an other 140250 steps shown in my scoreboard instead of the same amount of steps I had Oct.13.
The scoreboard to me is an incentive to do my exercise regularly also to try to improve my ranking in my age group of 70+ users.
simon says
You can visit the Samsung service center. The problem can be caused by some updates in s heath app and Samsung health service on the phone.

October 13 would be about exactly the same day that mine stopped after having worked since July 3 when I first got the phone. It has not worked since. Perhaps they had a major crash of some sort at that point. I am in central Pennsylvania so not sure what server I would connect to, and supposedly it relates to the carrier as well, but I think Samsung had some big software or hardware failure they have not fixed. I also found the scoreboard a motivator but don’t even check it any more since it is stuck at the Oct 13 count.
simon says
The server issue was more or less solved. At least, there are no large-scale server issues recently, as i know.
More and more issues are due to the Samsung health service and s health app. You need update them to the latest.

The application has been updated several times since it first failed to update from the server. Has made no difference.

You may try to manually start Galaxy Apps , then tap menu – purchased. Try to update all apps. This may update some Samsung services in the background.
In S helth, tap menu key (3 vertical dots in top right)–Settings–Accounts–Backup, you can tap backup now to see whether you get any errors. In the About S Health, make sure the version is 3.5.1.0693 or newer.

Mike Jeffrey says
Thanks for the additional ideas, but don’t think they will do anything. When I go to the “Purchased” in Galaxy Apps, there is a message in the center of the screen that says “All apps have been updated.” There was no option to try to update them further. On the account backup, it backed up with no problems. And the version is 3.5.1.0393. I did a manual check for updates as well, and it says I have latest version. The phone is tracking my daily steps, and my listing by date shows steps for each date, but it doesn’t update the scoreboard total step count and hasn’t since mid October.
simon says
Thank you for sharing your findings.
The point is, as I know, there are no wide server issues for some time.
Anyway, I have no other info on this.
You can push the guys in local Samsung service centre. Their engineers can actually test the connection and find out the causes. The problem is that many front-desk technicians are not willing to spend more time or willing to escalate the issue. If you insist that this is a claimed feature and the warranty should cover it, they may eventually solve the issue, or at least find out the bug.

I don’t want to switch to SHealth for my bike rides and walks because I have years of data in Runkeeper I don’t want to dispense with. Thanks

Runkeeper uses GPS to track your movement and calculate the distance. It doesn’t need pedometer.
Pedometer simply counts your steps as an activity tracker (without using GPS, which is not available indoors).

Update on long running Galaxy S5 S Health failure to link with server – After six weeks and lots of suggestions, my S Health now links with the server again. Unfortunately, whatever the problems were that existed before, they have not been resolved. When it first failed in mid October, I was 750th in my age group and in the top .6%. My phone did keep tracking steps until a day ago, but never synced with server. Once it synced with the server, it only added about 30,000 steps for those six weeks. The other interesting part is how it is updating since then:
December 1st in pm Total Steps: 1,128,903, #2921 in age group, top 3.1%
December 2nd in am Total Steps: 1,134,254, #3043 in age group, top 2.1%
December 2nd in pm Total Steps: 1,120,330, #3126 in age group, top 2.1%
So, I walked more than 10,000 steps Monday (correct), but by Tuesday morning fell back 120 places in my numerical ranking, but moved up 1% in my percentile ranking.
Between Tuesday morning and Tuesday afternoon, I lost 14,000 steps, fell back another 80 places, but stayed in the top 2.1%.
It appears the problems are far from resolved, but at least a bit hopeful now that they are doing something.

Had this problem with Exercise/Hiking for months. Same message and app would even have severe lag starting up.

I sacrificed my stored data (Exercise / Settings (3 dots upper right corner) / Reset data) and now it works fine again.

Just wanted to add a note to the database of info in these comments.
Was having LOTS of grief with the Exercise portion of S Health after 3 months of use. App would run REAL slow (updating timer every 10 or 40 or 120 seconds) and frequently abort with “S Health has stopped responding. Wait / Cancel”. It got to where this would happen almost immediately after starting a hike. Upgraded to latest version, cleared cache, even unstalled lots of other apps to minimize conflicts.
Before uninstalling as a last resort, I cleared all the data logged by Exercise. BANG. App works great and timer updates every second again.
Don’t know why the amount of stored data would drag down the app performance to virtually zero. I kinda wanted to keep the log data (don’t have/need Samsung account), but not that big of a deal. At one time I emailed the data to myself, but all you get is data, calories, time – no GPS data. Oh well. ITS WORKING AGAIN. 🙂

How is the average pace calculated in the the running and walking modes? It doesn’t look anywhere near correct to me. Eg, the average pace 6.68 miles in an hour should be something just under 9 mins per mile. The app displays an average of 10’14’ which I assume means 10 mins and 14 secs per mile

Can you add a water category to the food page for galaxy S5? So I can also track my daily water intake along with food, exercise?

I don’t think S Health app allow such customization.

Have you removed the scoreboard feature for the pedometer in the April 10, 2015 app update.? I am not finding it anywhere.
simon says
I think it is still there once you tap Pedometer. it is behind distance and calories. What’s the version of your S health app (settings–about S health)?

Hruns100s says
It’s 4.1.0.0059. Still not finding it. The pedometer is also called “steps” now
simon says
If the version is 4.x, yes, the scoreboard was removed. But it is mainly for Galaxy S6, not for S5.
In S5, most user should be still on 3.5.x, which does have the scoreboard.

Hi
It looks like it that my S Health app on my mini S5 does not connect anymore with the server so the daily info is not transferred to this server. How can I fix it? I did already a reset
Thanks
simon says
Samsung servers may be not so reliable in some regions. You have to wait until they fix it.
It’s not necessary to manually transfer S Health data. It can be done in background once connection to the sever is available.

Larry G says
Just had an update for S health on my S5, and it took away so much of what I liked, such as world wide comparisons, which helped motivate me, as well as total miles. Totally disappointed.
LarryG says
How can you get back to 3.5 version, if you were updated to 4.xx69?
simon says
The upgrade is annoying for some users. But, in Galaxy s5, you cannot roll back (downgrade) the s health app.

I HATE the new update!!! Removing the ability to manually enter a workout, made this completely USELESS. I’m going to disable this application, and download a worthwhile application.

I was using the daily run app part and then you updated it and I cannot figure out how to look back on history ,it was so easy before the Rev. I would like to go back to the older version , can I.

I just updated to the new version and i can’t find how to track my steps

They were removed in the latest S Health due to privacy concern in some regions.

Kirk Berry says
I don’t see an option on the new S Health to share my workouts. Anyone find that option hiding somewhere in the app?
simon says
Open the details of the workout, you can then find the share button on the top.
Also, when saving the workout, the share button is also available.

simon, have you tried that. All I can get the new version to share is a picture of the route or a picture of the elevation chart. Prior versions (1) could share many workouts at once and (2) share date like date, duration, calories, etc. Am I missing something??
simon says
No, you didn’t miss anything. This is the stupid “update” of S Health app.
For most users, I would recommend RunKeeper it other apps.

I have 2 phones, 1 work 1 personal, galaxy 5 and galaxy 6. Galaxy 6 says I met my goal for walking today. Galaxy 5 says I have no steps. It used to work, set to auto update. What am I doing wrong?
simon says
You can try to stop pedometer, then start it again in S5.
Anyway, it’s better to just Google Fit, which sync data very reliably.

Hello
If using my S-health to track my 10 K bike ride and it is using GPS is it safe to assume that I am using up DATA ?
simon says
GPS doesn’t use your mobile data. But S Health may sync data to the server of data connection is available. Some other apps may also use data in background. You can always turn off mobile data when not using.

The samsung health app appears to be forgetting activity. Yesterday it recorded 8k after I’d been walking. That info is no longer there and it just has records of 4 later sessions and a total of 6k. What’s going wrong?

Not sure. Your can check your account in the app to see where data are synced properly.

I have a Galaxy S5 phone and have been using the Samsung Health App to track my running. For some reason it stopped giving me my splits vocally. Did something change or could I have somehow turned that feature off. I can’t figure out how to turn it back on. It will say mileage, but it no longer gives me my splits and estimated time to complete the distance.
simon says
Do you mean the audio guides? You can tap Running on the main page. In the running page, tap MORE–Audio guide. Then you can enable coaching messages and guide at intervals.
