Galaxy S5 Dust and Water Resistant

Why is dust and water resistant important?

Why is dust and water resistant important?

You may spill some coffee on your smartphone.

You may use wet hands to answer some waited or emergent calls.

You may be caught in the rain with smartphones in your pocket (without an umbrella).

Your smartphone may be easily damaged due to water.  Electronics devices don’t like water.

As smartphones are accessible for majority of the population, we usually take less care with the device.

Dropping and water are two major reasons for smartphone repairs.

Samsung finally introduce water and dust resistant in Galaxy S5. This means there won’t be a Galaxy S5 Active.

Galaxy S5  dust and water resistant is a feature signalling Samsung shifts the update focus from bling-bling features to day-to-day phone usage. Samsung called it “back to basics”.

As most Galaxy S5 owners didn’t use S4 Active or Sony Xperia Z/Z1, you may have some questions on dust and water resistant. Here I will try to give you some detailed info on this feature in Galaxy S5.

Galaxy S5 Dust and Water Resistant is rated as IP67, what does the IP 67 mean?

Galaxy S5 dust and water resistant is certified as IP 67. It means Galaxy S5 can survival from some dust and water attacks.

IP Code, aka, International Protection Marking (informally, people also call it “ingress protection ratings”), is a standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).   The two digits indicate conformity of the protection level against dust and water.

The first digit represents the level of protection against access to hazardous parts (e.g., electrical conductors, moving parts) and against the ingress of solid particles/objects. For smartphones, we mainly concern about the degree of protection provided against dust (solid particles). The value varies from 0-6:

  • 0: No protection against contact and ingress of objects. It can be replaced with X.
  • 1: Protection any objects larger than 50 mm. Not relevant to smartphones.
  • 2: Protection any objects larger than 12.5 mm, for example, fingers or similar objects.  Not relevant to smartphones.
  • 3: Protection any objects larger than  2.5 mm, for example, tools or  thick wires. Not relevant to smartphones.
  • 4: Protection any objects larger than 1 mm, for example,  wires, screws. Not relevant to smartphones.
  • 5: Protection against dust (dust proof).  Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment. So, Galaxy S5 is dust proof.
  • 6: Dust tight. No ingress of dust. So, Galaxy S5 is dust proof and dust tight.

The second digit represents the level of protection against ingress of water. The value varies from 0-8. In addition, 6K and 9K are also legitimate and have special meaning.

  • 0:  No protection against the ingress of water. It can be replaced with X.
  • 1: Protection against dripping water (vertically falling drops).
  • 2: Protection against vertically dripping water  when the enclosure is tilted at an angle up to 15° from its normal position.
  • 3:  Protection against water spray up to 60° from the vertical position.
  • 4: Protection against water splashing from any direction.
  • 5: Protection  against water jets ( a 6.3mm  nozzle, at 30kPa pressure) .
  • 6: Protection  against strong water jets ( a 12.5mm nozzle, at 100kPa pressure).
  • 7: Protection against the immersion into water up to 1m, up to 30mins. This sometimes is called water resistant. Galaxy S5 is water resistant, not waterproof.
  • 8:  Protection against the immersion into water more than 1m for long time (continuous).  This sometimes is called waterproof.
  • 6K: Protection  against extremely strong water jets ( a 12.5mm nozzle, at 1MPa pressure).
  • 9K: Protection against close-range high pressure, high temperature spray/jet.

So, the IP 67 means  Galaxy S5 is dustproof and water resistant

Galaxy S5 Dust and Water Resistant is not waterproof

The IP 67 rating indicating Galaxy S5 is NOT waterproof.  You should not immerse it in water for long time, and you should not go beyond 1m.

Of course, it is safe to take out your Galaxy S5 in the rain.

Please note, for Galaxy S5, you need cover the USB port in the bottom to make it water resistant.

Can I take underwater photos when I have holiday in the beach

Galaxy S5 is not supposed to be used in the water, although there will be no damage if you do not let the camera go beyond 1m.

It is not recommended to take photos under the water with Galaxy S5. The salts in seawater may also cause some damages to your Galaxy S5.

Although Galaxy S5 is dust and water resistant, in some regions, you may have some warranty issues if  the damage is due to water.

Can I answer calls or listen music when showering?

Yes, you can  answer calls or listen music with Galaxy S5 when showering (you need cover the USB port). Actually, Sony used this in an advertisement for their water resistant Xperia Z.

Can I spill coffee or tea on Galaxy S5?

Yes, if your spill coffee or tea on Galaxy S5, you probably should not worry about the damage (provided that the USB port is properly covered).

However, if the water is really hot, it may still cause some problems.

Anyway, do not try to  pour coffee or water on your Galaxy S5. Drink it.

Can I take photos in the rain?

Yes, you can take photos in the rain with Galaxy S5, because it is water resistant.

However, the photo quality probably is not as good as you imaged. The camera is not designed for raining conditions.

Why should I cover the USB port?

You must cover the USB port of Galaxy S5 because the IP 67 rating is based on covered USB port.

If you do not cover the USB port, your S5 will be as vulnerable to water as S4, i.e., not water protection.

Should I cover the headset jack?

No, for Galaxy S5, you only need cover USB port (multipurpose jack). It is not necessary to cover the headset jack or any other mics.

  • usb cover broke off under normal use ,after only 21 days of use. How to fix and am i going to have to replace this part every 21 days. is this covered by the warranty

    • I think this is the grey area of warranty. If you talk nicely, but firmly, most service centres will fix it for free.

      • I did put my s5 under a water tap for just a few seconds. Later I looked to my screen under light when it was off and have some purple things like it was burn .. But is everything working normal. Is that a problem ?

        • the "blotches" are a result of the AMOLED creation process. every single AMOLED screen will have this to some extent, some worse than other.

      • That doesn't really answer the question. I have a similar question as kyle and I think what he's trying to ask is : how does the speaker still work when it is exposed to water since the rubber on the back cover doesn't cover the speaker.

        • There will be no damage to the speaker if it is exposed to water.

This doesn't mean it still work normally when immersed into water. You will barely hear the sound due to the damping of the water.

This is similar to the touch screen. No damage to it, but the response is minimum in water.

Please note, s5 is not designed to work in water. In some regions, damage due to water is not covered by Samsung warranty.

          • Is there a case you could recommend I use for underwater pics in the ocean? I was told this phone could withstand salt water as long as I didn't go beyond 3 ft (1m) & no longer than 30mins. If there's no options I'm selling my g5 for an i5c/s

          • There are many special cameras for this for underwater photography.

S5 is not designed for such usage. Any generic water-proof case/cover should work. I cannot recommend because I never use any of them.

      • Just dropped my s5 in the shower(listening to a podcast), now the speakers are muffled like listening from another room thru water. Should I be concerned? I've only had it 3 weeks!

        • Let it dry for a few hours. If the speaker still does not work after 24 one day, you may visit Samsung service centre.

    • You should NOT try. You may have warranty issues.

S5 is not water-proof. You are not supposed to immerse the phone in the water purposely (although some people tried it).

      • Its clearly that we shouldn't try it out; but my old phone gave up when i took it undeliberate with me in the sea. So you think the Samsung S5 could "survive" a 3minutes trip in salt water without any (big) damage?

        • It "should" have no damage if you make sure the USB cover is applied properly. Also, if should not go beyond 1m depth.

For seawater, you'd better rinse it with fresh water after you take the phone out.

In most regions, water damage may be not covered by warranty.

          • How can i check the warranty for my region? P.S. I'm having the issue with the speaker too although it only got wet today, can you tell me about the Samsung Service centre?

          • It depends on the region. When you bought the phone, in the package, there usually is a warranty card.

In some regions, the warranty may be provided by some contractors. So, you need check with local Samsung office or refer to the warranty card.

    • Hi Dip, if you want to take your phone in dirty or salty water why don't you get a SwimCell 100% waterproof bag for mobile phones. It can go down to 10m too and spend up to one hour in the water, then you don't have to worry about your phone at all :-)

    • Don't try! The screen is also not very responsive. You'd better to get some professional or special camera for such purposes.

Anyway, water damage, in some regions, is NOT covered in Samsung warranty.

        • I have a question does the little metal looking flap covering the USB/charger plugin (That comes on the phone) the USB cover you keep referring to. Or is that a separate purchase?

          • It's the one that comes with your phone. It's not necessary to buy it separately.

The USB port must be convered to prevent water damages.

  • My phone was exposed to minimal water in the shower and now the sound is minimal. I only had a shower half an hour ago but will it be covered by warranty if it doesn't improve?

    • When it is fully dry, it will very likely work as normal.

The warranty in most regions does not cover water damage (even for Active versions). But most of the time, they may honor it.

  • I took my s5 in the pool with me to record the family swimming from under the water. Everything works fine with the phone, but now the speaker sounds all distorted and very low sound. Is there any way I can fix this or will it fix itself????

    • Usually, once it's dry, the speaker should back to normal. But this may take at least a few hours.

    • No, you need only cover the USB port.

But you should not try. Water damage may be not covered by the standard warranty on your region.

  • hey i tried my S5 in a glass of water but after that i noticed that the camera has a water inside that makes my camera so blurry. what should i do.?

    • Normally, this should not happen if you use the original back cover. But anyway, you may leave it for one or two days to see whether it's gone.

If you can "see" water droplets inside, you should send the phone for repair immediately. Otherwise, the camera or even the phone may get permanently damaged.

Please note galaxy s5 water resistant is not waterproof. It should survive from water spill; but you should not immerse it into water. In most regions Samsung's warranty doesn't cover water damage.

        • Probably, but you should treat it lightly. It's more or less entertainment. The dry rice may absorb moisture effectively by forming prous media (large surface area)

For s5, if you can see the droplets, or you can see the fog after a few hours, send it for repair immediately.

  • Can I listen to music underwater. For example swimming as long as it is no deeper than 1m for 30 minutes?

    • Not a good idea. You need a waterproof headphone. You will not hear anything from the speaker.

    • Galaxy S5 is not designed for such usage. The standard warranty doesn't cover water damage in most regions.

    • You need check with local Samsung service centre. The warranty terms are different in different regions.

  • HI
i have the S5 , and I took it in the shower with me to listen to music
but when I wanted to change the song the screen wasnt responsive at all when it was wet, I had to dry it up to be used
is it how it should be, or is it faulty screen?
I thought the IP67 lets you use the phone even if it is wet . :\

    • This is normal. The screen will be less sensitive when wet. If you really need it, you can increase the touch sensitivity.

S5 is a consumer product, not professional one. The certification is more of less on protection (your s5 should not be damaged). But it's not designed for wet environment use.

      • ok thnx
I already tried the increased sensitivity, but still it didnt work at all when the screen is wet
        it is disappointing
        :\

    • It depends on: 1) how strong is your pee jet; 2).how far are you peeing at it; 3).how long can you pee; 4).when did you pee? the chemicals in your pee may be different in different times; 5)...........

Anyway, if you accidently peed on it, clean it with water should be fine.

  • After bringing my phone in water for thirty seconds the volume up button won't work but the down button will. Is this covered by warranty???

    • You'd better check with local Samsung service center.

The volume rocker seldom have this issue.

    • Wait until it is dry.

Once it is dry, insert and remove a headset. This may trigger it to return to normal state.

Of course, if there are any hardware damages, you have to visit local Samsung service centre.

      • This also happened to me, this morning around 8 I took a shower, my phone worked great all day, however I went into work at 730 I plugged in my headphones and listened to my music at lunch at 1230 I unplugged them and browsed on my phone when I started to receive a phone call I noticed it was still on headset mode, now it won't go off and I can't hear calls without my headphones or my music?!?!

        • you may try to shutdown the phone, remove the battery, wait one or two mins, put battery back, then reboot the phone.

    • The capacity depends on your needs. Normally you can try to get a 32 go or even 64gb one.

You should get a class 10 card if you want to save camera shots directly to SD card. Don't get any class 4 card. It is too slow and may affect your photo or videos.

  • I accidentally dropped my S5..landed face down luckily it didnt crack but the camera lens glass cracked in the lower corner & caused the glass to shatter but not fall out... it still projects well but will water still seep through if I was to have a water type accident?..

    • Very likely, water will enter from these cracks or small gaps. Be careful.

You may send it for repair. It should not be expensive.

  • I took my S5 in the pool for barely 5 minutes and not below 2 feet at most. It's done. the screen doesn't respond at all now. Repairs are so espensive and i am hating my life right now.

  • I have a small crack across the screen of my phone. You can barely even see it. Is my phone still water resistant?

  • I dropped my S5 and made a dent in the aluminium. My battery cover is still tight but I can open it by using my fingernail in some tiny gaps.I was wondering if it is still dust and water resistant

    • Not sure. Bur normally a dent in the metal part should not be an issue if there is no deformation in plastic part. The tiny gap is probably normal. Water resistance replies on the rubbers inside.

  • Hey Simon, my phone has a slight gap between its lcd and its frame out of the box, you will able to notice it if you look at it very closely, gap is on the right side of screen only, I am worried if it's still water resistant. . Help!

    • It is probably not an issue. Water resistance relies on the rubber underneath.

Of course, if you can exchange it, you can try to get a better one.

  • Hi have s5 it got soaked with rain as I left it on table outside for couple minutes samsung say they won't fix it but they say it is water resistant

    • I think this depends on local laws. Even for active version, in most regions, water damage is not covered by Samsung warranty.

Water resistant is more or less just for a spill of coffee.

  • my galaxy s5 puts water when I splash it on the water, it puts a littlebwater in the battery

  • i was in rain.. i tried using my phone and it was not working well. it was kind off handing.. then i wiped my screen with a cloth n it was working fine. so is that s5 will not work at all in rain. i cant call or anythng.. the touch goes num..?????

    • S5 is not designed for such usage. (don't trust commercials). Water resistant just means their should be no damage due to the water. It doesn't imply the phone is still fully functional under this condition.

    • You should not take underwater photos with Galaxy S5. Galaxy S5 is NOT designed for such usage. In most regions, water damage is not covered by Samsung warranty.

Although there are some S5 owners showing their underwater photos with S5, you'd better not to try (not everyone can win lottery).

  • Ok i wanna know as long as the battery part of it is clothes it can just put in water just like that???

    • It is water resistant, not water-proof. You should not put it in water in purpose.

In most regions, water damage is NOT covered in the Samsung warranty.

  • I got a little bit of water on my s5 from rain and now it is stuck in headphone mode. How do I fix this? I've done a battery pull for one hour, reset the phone, and it won't go away. I'm about to try a factory reset but I don't want to lose my things.

    • Normally, once it's try, it should recover. You can try to plug a headset, then remove it.

Anyway, if the phone still refuses to leave that mode, you probably have to visit Samsung service center. Of course, before leaving, you can back up your data and try to preform a factory reset to see whether it works.

  • My nephew knocked a pint of larger on my fone ... The phone is fine yet when I call somebody unless it's on loud speak I can't hear the receiving phone connecting, ringing or anything... will 5 his fix itself

    • Once it dries, the phone should be able to fix itself.

If the problem persists after 2 or more days, you may have to visit local Samsung service center.

  • i didn't cover my headset jack an had an error when i put it under the water tape ... it appeared the earphones are on in the notification bar ... i couldn't hear calls :/ or answer it ...... also now i cant volume up or down through the headset :/ or pause music or answer calls ...... but i can hear music ..... help me pls

    • Normally, it's not necessary to cover headset jack. You only need cover the USB port.

You may wait about one day to see whether it can recover itself.

You can also shutdown the phone, remove the battery, wait a few mins, then put the battery back and try again.

In the worst scenario, if there is any water damage, you may have to visit local Samsung service centre.

    • You should not put it in water even for the active version. Water damage is not covered in Samsung warranty on most regions.

Theoretically, if the depth is less than 0.5m, it should last at least 30 mins. But don't try.

  • Can I take galaxy s5 under water pool for upto 10 min. Without using it ....
    And
Use phone while raining like taking calls or listen music

    • You should NOT try this deliberately. Water and dust resistant is a kind of protection. In case you spill coffee on the phone or the phone falls to the toilet, your S5 may be safe. But Galaxy S5 was NOT designed for use in water.

In most regions, water damage may be not covered by the warranty.

    • Normally, after it dries, the speaker would work as usual.

Please note, some chemicals in the water (e.g., in the pool) may still cause some erosion or damage.

  • So I put my phone in a pool that you would buy at walmart and it was working perfect than I checked my speakers and there not working what can I do and well warranty cover that?

    • It depends. In most regions, water damage is not covered by the warranty.

Please note, the speaker may take long time to dry.

  • Simon,
Have you not read the 100's of complaints on the internet about this single part - the USB cover for the Galaxy S5? My wife and I bought two in March 2014 and both have a broken USB cover. I thought I had it covered with the $20 a month insurance I purchased with the phones but apparently there is a $100 deductible so the insurance is wasted. The replacement part sells for as little as $5 on the internet and YouTube videos show that it takes less than 30 minutes to replace. This being the case, it would seem Samsung would stand behind its product and be proactive about providing a fix for EVERYONE who has one of these phones because all owners will have the same problem soon. I am a big believer in Samsung quality and have four TV's, a refrigerator, and these two phones.

    • Luckily, for mine, there are no issues so far.

If it's broken, it may be covered by the warranty. Of course, this depends on local laws.

  • hey simon i tried to wet my s5 on the faucet (i didnt submerge it) and then i realized when i opened the back case some water went inside (but not up to the rubber part) should i be worried?

ps. is the camera lens scratchproof? is it okay to put it in flat surfaces that might hit the lens?

    • You can just clean and dry it. Usually it should not be an issue.

No, I don't think the lens cover is scratch proof. But it should be fine to put it on a flat surface.

  • I dropped my phone in bowl of water for only at least 2 seconds then it only displays black screen.

    • If the phone cannot be turne on, you should remove the back cover, remove the battery, wipe any water inside, and visit local Samsung service center for a repair.

BTW, did you forget to cover the USB port, or did you change the back cover?

  • People do no when they say it water resistant it not actually waterproof. It wouldn't be affected if u were stuck In the rain but not go swimming with it me I'm not gonna be that careless even if it is water resistant I ain't stupid to take my phone out when it raining a phones made to be used aa a phone nothing more and everyone lost sight of that yes I have the s5 but I regret getting it and as soon as I get upgrade at end of the year bye bye s5 hello iPhone 6 too many problems with the s5 dust got into the speaking mic not supposed to u can't even use the phone when it raining it overheats burns to touch and battery drains to fast

    • If you are caught in the rain with both S5 and 5s, very likely, your 5s will get water damage, and s5 will not. This is the real meaning of water resistant. Plain and simple.

Water resistant does not means it is designed for working in rain or in water.

  • I put my S5 in my pool, going no more then 1 foot or 2 underwater. I filmed a few videos of the kids jumping in. I had to use the volume buttons to take pictures. When using the video camera, I had to start and stop it out of the water. The touch screen becomes completely useless when wet (anything more then a few drops made the screen act very wierdly). Being extra cautious, I immediately disassembled my phone to make sure it was dry inside. It was not! Note the USB port was closed. I noticed a little bit of dampness when I took the back cover off. I immediately dried it off and re-assembled. I would not recommend taking it in the pool or ocean on a regular basis. I would not recommend leaving it in the water for a long time. Its nice to know that its water resistant, for that unfortunate time it gets wet, but I would not rely on this to stay water tight at any time during it's lifespan.

    • it is clearly NOT designed for underwater use. that is why you experienced difficulty with the touch screen and camera functions. it is not to be purposely submerged and used in water. it is designed for a random spill or quick splash of liquid. how do people not understand this. if you want to take photos underwater I suggest a go pro with water PROOF casing. not a water resistant phone with no case.

  • My phone dropped in water and I can't phone nor receive calls and my camera nor working everything works 100 percent what can I do ?

  • I put my s5 in the pool just for 3 seconds no more than 1 feet and now I my speaker it's not working very well what can I do?

    • If it does not work after one day, you probably have to visit local Samsung service centre to repair it.

Of course, before going to the service centre, you can try to shoutdown the phone, remove the battery, wait a few mins, put the battery back, then reboot the phone to see whether it works.

  • My screen has a small crack on the front, would it still be water resistant? And I honestly don't know how it cracked, kind-of scared me!

  • When we went to the Samsung Centre, the lady says that i could set up the camera before going underwater and she says its waterproof because they had a demonstration. Is it really true or what?

    • She should tell you water damage probably is NOT covered by their warranty.

It is not designed to use under the water. Get a water-proof bag or some professional tools if you really want to use it under water.

    • Galaxy S5 is NOT designed for the usage in such environment. The water resistant means the phone can survive from waters. For example, if you were caught in a rain with phone in the pocket, the water resistant may protect your phone from water damage.

When the screen has water, it will be less responsive. The speaker/earpiece may not work properly when it is covered by water.

Please note, although Samsung advertise the water resistant feature, in most regions, water damage is not covered by warranty.

      • Although S5 is Not design to immersed in water but how much time it can stay in water ? And while raining can we receive the incoming calls for at least how much time?if it is important calls.

        • About 30 mins. But I don't think you want to try your luck.

Receiving calls in rain should not cause any damages to the phone. The problem is the screen may be not so responsive and the speaker or earpiece may not produce sound as you want.

  • Hello!i used my S5 to take pictures in the sea, after that i rinsed it with clean bottled water,it worked perfectly that day but the second day when i woke up there was no answer from my touchscreen,i left it like that at home because i couldn't use it and after one day and a half more or less, the touch screen started to respond slowly, and now it's perfectly working..the only problem that i have is that the notification led is not working anymore.if i will take it to the waranty they will have to fixed it right? Thank you!

    • If it is clear the damage is due to water, they may ask you to pay for the repair. Of course, they need show you the evidence the damage is due to water.

Anyway, it depends on each service centre....

      • It's really funny because they say water resistant and 1m underwater for 30 minutes, and now you say it is possible to ask me to pay :))...and beside that i have some small gaps between the touchscreen and the frame..i think this also might be the problem..you said it depends on the region if the waranty repairs water damages,i am in Austria, you know something about that?Thank you!

        • First, this is a community site and is not affiliated to Samsung.

You should contact Samsung or its agents as indicated in the warranty card for official answers.

  • I cleaned my phone with a wet paper towel and the speaker stopped working properly. Sounded fuzzy and the headset kept saying it was plugged in, when it was not. Called Verizon and they tried to charge me $100 for a replacement. Called samsung and they won't replace. Told me to go to best buy and have one of their guys inspect it, and they will consider repairing it. Ridiculous! A water resistant phone shouldn't malfunction from a little water, and I shouldn't get the run around when asking for a replacement or repair. I was a long time samsung user...may just have to switch brands now. So sad. I really loved this phone.

    • You may let it dry itself. After a few hours, you may remove the battery, wait a few mins, then put it back. Check the phone again.

  • what if i go hiking and i just out it under water, possibly six inches for thirty seconds,is thats safe, will it damage the phone

    • nobody knows. But normally, it should not cause any damage (make sure the USB cover is on).

But please note, in most regions, water damage is not covered by standard warranty.

    • All devices may suffer from this issue. You can always clean the cache, wipe the cache partition it make it faster.

But anyway, this should not be a real problem for S5 due to its good hardware specs.

  • Yesterday I took my Samsung Galaxy s5 to the beach and I dropped it in the salt water and ever since that happened it hasn't been working, the screen is black and nothing works I put the phone in a bag of rice over night and still nothing. Please help!!!!

    • You should send it to the service centre immediately. You need dry and clean inside; otherwise, the parts will be damaged faster.

  • My friend took my S5 into the ocean and took underwater pictures with it and now it is not turning on. The battery drained really fast from 100% to about 15% in like 30 mins. Now when I plug it in, nothing pops up and the screen is black. No "charging" display or anything. I rinsed the phone off with fresh water to maybe stop the crystallization of the salt but I HAVE NO IDEA what to do ...(I also tried taking out the battery and back cover to possibly air dry but still nothing) Help please!

    • You'd better to visit Samsung service center to check the phone. If water damage is on the usb connector, the repair should nor expensive. If it's on the board,it can be expensive to replace the board.

In most regions water damage is not covered under Samsung warranty.

  • is galaxy s5 compatible(even if not advised) with immersion in mainstream swimming pools(chlorinated) and immersion in seawater?

    • will the s5 also be damaged or affected in any way if you immerse it in a swimming pool or take it in for a dip in the beach?thanks

      • Yes, your galaxy s5 may be damaged and Samsung will not cover it under normal warranty.

  • My galaxy s5 was charging and a cup of coffee was spilled and got on speaker and charging port. Still works and dabbed dry with a tissue. Any suggestions.

    • The speaker should be ok. It's hard to say for USB port as the port cover is not on.

If it still works, then it's hard to check the problem.
